Novelist Jeffrey Eugenides addressed a record crowd during the 10th Annual James Merrill Lecture in September. Eugenides started by expressing gratitude to the Ingram Merrill Foundation — which Merrill set up to help artists, musicians and writers — for bestowing a grant early in his career, when it made a significant difference to him. He went on to describe his surprise and delight at being put up in the Merrill apartment, and his appreciation for the way its eccentric and historic nature have been preserved.
