James Merrill at Home: A Talk by Architectural Historian Rachel Carley
February 2 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
From the mid-1950s until his death in 1995, acclaimed poet and writer James Merrill made his home in Stonington, Connecticut, where he and his partner David Jackson shared a color-drenched apartment in a quirky old building on Water Street. Merrill was drawn to the intimacy of small spaces, which he likened to stanzas in a poem, and the puzzle box of tiny rooms where he nested happily for so many years would hold an important place in his life and work. Rachel Carley’s presentation will trace the unusual history of the historic 1901 building and explore the way in which Merrill infused his verse with references to his apartment’s idiosyncratic décor, and the foibles of small-town life in the village he loved.
