Gimbiya Kettering has an MFA in Creative Writing from American University. Most recently, she was the Undiscovered Voices Scholar at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland where she rewrote her first novel, Love in the Time of Democracy, early drafts of which have won awards and grants from American University, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the Elizabeth George Foundation. She has also had the opportunity to attend numerous conferences and residencies, including Yaddo, Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation (VONA), Callaloo Workshop, and Wesleyan Writers Workshop. Her characters are often in the midst of shifting identities and combining ethnicities inspired by her cross-cultural experiences. Kettering’s short stories have been published in The Kenyon Review, The Crab Orchard Review, and The Florida Review, among other literary magazines.
