Langdon Hammer is Chair of the English Department at Yale where he teaches modern and contemporary poetry. He is the author of a book of literary criticism, Hart Crane and Allen Tate: Janus-Faced Modernism, and the editor of O My Land, My Friends: The Selected Letters of Hart Crane as well as the new Library of America edition of Crane’s complete poetry and selected letters. The poetry editor of The American Scholar, he writes about poetry for The New York Times Book Review and other magazines. He has been at work since 2001 on the first biography of James Merrill. The book, for which he won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003-4, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf.
