The James Merrill House is a writer's home and a home for writers. As part of CT Open House Day, we will open the doors of the JMH to the public for an opportunity to tour the charming, color-drenched home of one of America's greatest poets at 107 Water Street in the picturesque Stonington Borough.

About the event
When James Merrill passed away in 1995, he left his home at 107 Water Street to the Stonington Village Improvement Association, but with no instructions on what to do with it. In an effort to carry on the literary and philanthropic legacy of the late poet, Merrill's friends, neighbors and family formulated an idea for a writer-in-residence program; a place where writers could come to work quietly amongst Merrill's thousands of books and collections of 20th century art and music.
Today, the JMH has hosted 125 authors of multiple genres in Merrill's quirky, color-drenched third floor apartment and fourth floor studio, which remain much the same as Merrill left them at the time of his passing. As part of CT Open House Day, we invite you into the home of one of America's greatest poets, a National Historic Landmark building nestled within the picturesque Stonington Borough.
Tours will be offered from 11am to 3pm. RSVP encouraged but not required; just stop by our street-level Visitors Center!
